Have fun crocheting this summer and create the perfect bandana with me!
Welcome back to a new Blog post!💕 I’m so excited to share this pattern with you! This cute bandana has become one of my absolute favorite makes lately—and honestly, I didn't expect to fall in love with it this much. It's made using filet crochet, which might sound a little fancy at first, but trust me—it’s basically just a fun mix of double crochet stitches and chain spaces. Once you get the hang of it, it’s super relaxing and a bit addictive in the best way.
The bandana creates this lovely pattern of little hearts, and it looks way more intricate than it actually is (those are the best kind of projects, right?). I’ve already made five of these in just two days because they’re that quick and satisfying. It’s the kind of pattern where you finish one and immediately want to start another—perfect for when you want something easy and meditative, but still want to end up with something beautiful and wearable.
Ready to turn heads this summer? This crochet bandana pattern is beginner-friendly, relaxing to make, and gives you that effortlessly cool, handmade vibe. Whether you're lounging at a picnic, dancing at a festival, or just soaking up the sunshine, this bandana is the perfect lightweight accessory to complete your look. With its sweet heart motifs and breezy feel, you’re not just adding a cute touch to your outfit—you’re also showing off your creative flair and love for slow fashion. Let’s kick off the season with the charming and versatile Filet Heart Bandana!
Let’s talk about filet crochet for a second, in case it’s new to you or you’ve always wondered how it works. Filet crochet is a technique where you use a mix of double crochet stitches and chain spaces to create little “windows” or “blocks” that form pictures or patterns—kind of like pixel art, but made with yarn. Each row is a combination of filled blocks (usually 3 double crochets) and open blocks (a double crochet, two chains, and another double crochet).
When you follow a chart or a written pattern, those blocks come together to form shapes—in this case, cute little hearts. It might look detailed, but it’s super easy once you get the rhythm of it. Once you’ve done a few rows, it becomes almost automatic, and it’s so satisfying to watch the design emerge as you go. It’s also a great stitch technique to know because it can be used for everything from scarves and shawls to home décor like curtains or table runners!
I used fingering weight yarn for this design—just one ball is all you need—so it’s not only light and perfect for summer, but also super affordable. Most of the stitches are just double crochets and chains, so even though it’s a finer yarn, it works up really quickly. If you’ve never tried filet crochet before, this is a great way to try! You’ll be surprised how fast it starts to make sense once you see those heart shapes appear row by row.
The finished bandana is light, breezy, and ideal for sunny days—great for picnics, beach days, festivals, or just keeping your hair up in a cute way. It also makes a really sweet gift, and if you’re someone who sells at markets, this is the kind of thing people love to pick up because it’s so pretty and feels really special.
More Summer Inspiration
And here’s a little bonus: if you want to play with the finished size, you totally can! Just use a smaller hook for a tighter, daintier version, or block it out and it’ll grow into more of a statement piece. You can even take the same filet stitch pattern and keep going to turn it into a shawl—it’s super versatile.
I’m sharing the full pattern for free, but if you're like me and love having a visual guide, I’ve also made a PDF version that includes a crochet chart showing you each row—great for visual learners or if you just like to follow along with a diagram.
I hope you enjoy making this as much as I did! If you do try it out, tag me so I can see your version—it genuinely makes my day every time someone shares their project 💛

The following measurements are taken after a light steam blocking. This step is optional, but keep in mind that the bandana may stretch and grow slightly in size as a result.
Length from top to bottom: 29 cm/ 11 inches
Width: 53 cm/ 21 inches
Ties: 25 cm/ 10 inches each
CONSTRUCTION
This bandana is made using the filet crochet technique, which involves a combination of double crochet stitches and chain spaces to create a grid-like fabric. The heart motifs are formed by filling in specific blocks of the grid with solid double crochet stitches while leaving other blocks open. This simple yet effective method allows for detailed designs with a lightweight, lacy texture.
This design is worked in rows, turning at the end of each row, from the bottom up. Once you have completed the main body of the bandana, you will create the ties and a picot border on each side of the bandana.
The chain 4 worked at the beginning of each row counts as 1 double crochet and 1 chain space.
When counting stitches at the end of each row, each chain will count as one stitch. For example, if a row begins with 1 double crochet, followed by 1 chain, and ends with 1 double crochet, the total stitch count for that row would be 3.
Finally, to achieve a better look, you can steam block your project after finishing.

Making the Ties and Border
Continue working on the 1st TIE.
Chain 51, loosely sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 50 sl sts in total.
Now, continue working on the top of the bandana
1 sc in 1st dc from row, (1 sc in next ch-sp, 1 sc in next dc) 3 times in total, 1 sc in next 2 dc, (1 sc in next ch-sp, 1 sc in next dc) until there are 2 dc, 1 sc in next 2 dc, (1 sc in next ch-sp, 1 sc in next dc) until the end of the row.
Continue working on the 2nd TIE
Chain 51, loosely sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 50 sl sts in total.
Now, you will continue working a border on each side of the bandana:
The border of the bandana is worked in one round without turning, so the right side of your work will be always facing you. When working the vertical sides of the bandana, it won’t be clear enough where to place each stitch so I recommend working 2 sc over 1 row of double crochet rows (each dc will be now lying horizontally). This way you will achieve a balanced edge.
(Evenly distribute 3 sc, 1 Picot St) repeat until there is one row left, work 2 sc in last row, 1 Picot st, continue working on the opposite side of the bandana, (evenly distribute 3 sc, 1 Picot st) until the end there is one row left, 2 sc in last row, sl st to 1st sl st from tie. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
