Crochet sunflower coasters made in vibrant colors

There’s something undeniably joyful about sunflowers. Their bright golden petals and bold centers seem to radiate warmth, no matter the season. That’s exactly the feeling I wanted to capture when I designed these crochet sunflower coasters β€” something cheerful, full of texture, and just plain fun to make.

The inspiration came on a slow summer day when I was setting the table for lunch and wishing I had something handmade to brighten it up. I love how sunflowers feel right at home both in sunny, summery setups and in rustic autumn dΓ©cor. Paired with soft neutrals or deep earthy tones, they’re just as perfect for cozy fall tablespaces as they are for breezy summer picnics. These coasters are a lovely way to bring a bit of that seasonal charm to your home without needing to overhaul your entire dΓ©cor.

These coasters are all about balance: simple construction, bold texture, and practical use. Each coaster is made using just five rounds β€” so once you get the hang of the stitch pattern, they come together quickly (about 20 minutes per piece). That makes them an excellent project for beginners who want something that looks impressive without being overwhelming. And if you’re anything like me, once you make one, you’ll find yourself reaching for your hook again and again. They're addictive in the best way.

What’s the best yarn to make your crochet coasters?

One thing I always recommend when making coasters β€” especially ones that will actually be used β€” is to choose your yarn wisely. 100% cotton yarn is ideal for projects like this. Unlike acrylic, cotton is heat-resistant and absorbent, meaning it can actually protect your surfaces from hot mugs, condensation, or little spills. It also has great stitch definition, which really makes those full, textured sunflower petals pop!

These coasters aren’t just a treat for your own table β€” they make thoughtful, handmade gifts for birthdays, housewarmings, or end-of-summer celebrations. Bundle a few together with some twine or pop them in a little basket with a mug and tea bags for a cozy DIY gift set. They’re also perfect for craft markets or Etsy shops. With their quick turnaround time and eye-catching design, they’re exactly the kind of practical-yet-pretty item that customers love to snap up.

While I originally imagined these as summer table accents, I quickly realized they look just as good in deeper, earthy colors for fall setups. You can easily switch from bright yellows and greens to burnt orange, deep red, or even brown and mustard to suit your space or the season.

So if you’re looking for a quick project that delivers high impact with minimal time and yarn, this one’s for you. Let’s get started β€” you’ll be surprised how quickly your own little sunflower patch starts to grow.
